Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) hosted the Centre for Women's Studies/Gender (PSW/PSG) in Malang. About 100 people who were the administrators of PSW/PSG, representatives of Malang Governent Offices and Batu Government Offices, the advisor of Forkom PSW/PSG in Malang, female observers, representatives of the police station, and students declared the Communication Forum (Forkom) of PSW/PSG Malang. Prof. Dr. Ir. Keppi Sukesi, MS was elected as the Chief of forum .

Keppi said that the forum was born of concerns and needs that existed in society. Even we said that we lived at independent nation, there were still abuse and violence cases against the women. “we need something to concern on protecting the women and female figures,” said he.

He added that one of the aims of this forum was the achievement of justice and gender equality. Now the justice was still very far from what we expected. That was why all elements had to be able to work well. The strength of PSW/PSG was the team that gathered and built all patterns. The patterns were not separated from Tri Dharma of University; devotion and research. Finding the solutions for the future could be done through the education and teaching.

Further, he said that the forum would not be run by its own, but would also have cooperation with government and non-governmental organizations. For its short term plan, the forum preferred strengthening itself in advance. "This forkom will also intensify the gender socialization. We still hold on to Tri Dharma of University for its long term plan," continued Keppi.

"Forming the forum is a good thing, for it is important to keep in touch,” said Lusi Bambang. Lusi also said that the PKK in Malang had been looking for those who have expertise, skills, and knowledge to be transmitted to the public. The goal is to improve the quality of the family, especially the economic.

PSW, at UMM, had been remodelled into a larger institution since November 2009. It was called Research and Empowerment of Women and Children (LP3A) then. The Chief of LP3A, Dr. Trisakti Hand, MM stated that the institution would identify the problems in society, especially in Malang. "With the mapping problem, there will be positive solutions to improve the condition of the society and to support the development," he said. (trs/rwp/t_ris)
