For the second time, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) became the host of Eagle Award Documentary Competition (EADC) Roadshow by Metro TV. This year, the roadshow was held in the theater room of UMM Dome, Thursday-Friday, (3/18-19). This event was received appreciation from various groups ranging from students, teachers, high school/vocational school students of some areas in East Java. The event was divided into two sessions. The first day was Coaching Clinic and the second day was Screening Med of the Eagle. Interestingly, on the second day the speakers did not only present the expert of national documentary movie, but also three The Eagles (name for EADC finalists) from Malang who intentionally shared tips and experiences.
"It is an appreciation form of Metro TV to young Malang movie makers. For three years, Malang became finalist with very interesting ideas," said Executive Producer, Jastis Arimba. According to him, every year Malang came with ideas and spirit which were competitive compared to other big cities in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Dean of FISIP of UMM, Dr. Wahyudi, said that documentary movies can be a new foundation to the birth of identity-full movies. There were many movies in Indonesia which was only presenting artist figures without good messages. According to him, EADC will provide value and open the eyes of the audience that all the phenomena happened in Indonesian.
"Currently, the Indonesian people seem to forget their identity as a citizen of Indonesia. We sometimes claim ourselves as Indon, rather than Indonesian. We are Indonesian citizens who left the Indonesian identity. EADC will open our eyes that all that things happened and became part of Indonesia," said Dean who is also a lecturer of Sociology Department at UMM.
Lianto Luseno as the speaker agreed on Dean’s statement. According to this documentary movie maker, documentary movie is very close to social reality, without any cover-up. Local value appeared in each documentary movie. Each documentary which has been viewed always leaves a message and gives inspiration. "The movies produced by young Indonesian movie makers become the proofs of social reality portrait in Indonesia. The most important is that each movie can inspire the movie audience," he said.
Movie played in the first session was Kepala Sekolahku Pemulung, Prahara Tsunami Berbaur Bakau and Gorila dari Gang Buntu. Those three were "The Best Three of EADC 2007-2009”. In the second session, the movies were Gubug Reot di atas Minyak Internasional, Buah yang Menunggu Mati, dan Merajut Impian di balik Catwalk Jalanan. All the three were finalists from Malang. Interestingly, two movies shown were product of Communication Studies Department Students of UMM.
"It's like playing a movie in its own house because most of the movies are the products of Malang movie makers," said Taufan Agustian, Coordinator of "Makmoer Sedjahtera Community" which became the event organizer of this event. The community which the members are Communication Studies Department students of UMM won two categories of EADC in 2009.
"We are determined to maintain Malang achievement as the winner of Eagle Award. Our community is ready to open documentary movie clinic for anybody who wants to learn the production of documentary movies in Malang," added Taufan. (rka/nas/t_alf)
