Malang- Student Day committee and Culture Institution of Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM) held cultural study with Kyai Kanjeng and Emha Ainun Najib on Saturday night (19/11). The unique musical performance was also alternated with the dialog between Emha and new students present at UMM Dome.
Stage performance of Emha made audience feel enthusiastic. He came to the crowd and talked to audience without microphone while musicians kept playing on the stage. Emha asked students to sing. Spontaneously, people sitting at tribune went down to be able to hear what he said. That was his trick to make people sitting there join him.
Dozens of songs were sung by the man coming from Jombang. In the middle of the song, Emha gave some reflection with the theme "Smile Indonesia". "Do we still smile? Of course, we smile without being instructed, just smile," said Emha. It means although this country is gloomy, we shouldn't be gloomy. Young people must be optimistic.
More than 3 hours Emha gave fascinating performance. Famous songs such as Lir-ilir and Tombo Ati were sung in various versions. He also sang national songs such as Padamu Negeri (For My Country), Syukur (Thankful), Tanah Airku (My Fatherland). Students joined him to sing, and it made shaking atmosphere.
Deputy Rector III, Drs. Joko Widodo, MSi, said the event was a series of event in commemorating the twentieth year of UMM student day. The event that is always done on Saturday for the Fresmen has lasted since 1992. During the event, students are exempted from academic activities, but the day is filled with the events to dig talent, interest, and reasoning. "Through the event we can dig the students' talent to be trained further," said Joko.
