It is not strange that Malang is called City of Flowers. However, less attention for several plants today has been caused by lack of people's awareness. The flowers are even in danger of extinction.

The matter has attracted consideration of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) students joining Pusat Studi Lingkungan dan Kemasyarakatan (PSLK). Because of their love to environment and plants, they have created a conservation of Javanese flowers at UMM.

Javanese flowers conservation is a means of preserving plants which grow only on this densely populated island. The location of the conservation is across the Brantas River, near rector's building. Accompanying by a field coordinator, we can see various plants cultivated there.

The conservation has been started since two years ago. The program is expected to re-introduce Javanese local wisdoms. It is also available for environmental education visit from TK, SD, SMP and SMA.

To introduce the location, PSLK of UMM has created this into one packet of campus tourism. “The program will increasingly support conservation as well as saving rare plants,” said Field Coordinator, Ahmad Sodirin. He claimed that it was the only Javanese flowers conservation in campuses all over Indonesia.

Number of participants of selection test for new students experiences a continuos increase this year.

Selection test for student candidates of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on Monday (5/14) smoothly took place. UMM Rector, Dr Muhadjir Effendy, and ranks monitored the test in main room and theater room of UMM Dome. The test was started at 8 to 10.30 a.m.

On the first cohort, New Student Admissions Unit (PMB) of UMM received 4171 registrants consisting of 2220 PMDK line and 1951 test line. “Indeed, there are still 3000 registrants who registered online but they do not participate the test because they have chosen to participate test of cohort II. They wait for graduation announcement from their high schools,” explained Chief of PBM, Dr. Ermanu Azizulhakim.

Ermanu said that number of registrants rised sharp this year compared to the same cohort last year. The increase was up to 75-90%. He was optimistic the trend would still the same at cohort II. However, quota of all departments at UMM did not change much. Total number of new students would be around 5.500 to 5.800.

For this cohort I, the number of UMM students that would be accepted was based on grade of test result. Every department had had standard of new students. The number would be different for example, Faculty of Medicine as the department with the highest grade. The department still has the highest number of registrants. Thus, the competition would be very tight. “We indeed

Prof Dr Bambang Widagdo MM. (Vice Rector I UMM)

Soon, graduates of SMA, SMK and MA will come to university. Come of them even have registered through certain lines before they graduate. This is the season of choosing university. Diferentiating between state and private university for some people is no longer relevant. It is because difficult to distinguish the quality, accreditation and tuition fee.
“It does not mean that state university is cheaper and more qualified. It happens also to private one which is not always expensive and low in quality,” said Vice Rector I of UMM, Prof Dr Bambang Widagdo MM. Below are his tips to choose a university.
First, look at the accreditation for both national and international accreditation. Today, standard of accreditation is believed as getting closer to the real quality. You can check through campus website, Dikti or you can directly come to the university.
Second, take a look at the qualification, works and networks of the human resources (lecturers), whether they are supported by adequate campus facilities such as library, laboratory and other learning facilities or not.
Third, find a campus with character, strong identity and not campus with no 'gender'. It means there are special characteristics you can identified to yourselves when you have become alumni. For example, the campus has a particular outstanding achievement.
Fourth, note the institutional reputation of campus. For private one, make sure that there is no

Coordination of Higher Learning Institute (Kopertis) Region 7 of East Java again awarded UMM as best private university. The award called as Rank Campus Award (AKU). It is different from previous year. In 2012, Kopertis added total number of the award. It included university, higher education, institute, academy, and polytechnic.

University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) again received AKU. UMM is one of campuses that successfully maintain the reward for five years successively since 2008—when it was launched. In 2010, when receiving for the third award, UMM received additional award named as AKU Kartika. UMM was appraised as the best rank campus for its institutional management, research, and community service as well as student affairs development.

Here an interview by the Chief of UMM Public Relation Nasrullah with the Coordinator of Kopertis 7 Prof. Dr. Sugijanto, MS. Apt in Surabaya certain time ago. The interview had also published at daily newspaper Republika page 6 on Friday (4/5).

What is the need of Kopertis 7 to give AKU award?
University that tried hard on improving its quality could be a role model for the others. So that, if university was taken as a model, certain assessment was need to be held. In addition, in this competitive era, most people take a look on quality. So, quality was measured by kinds of assessments and awards.

Dealing with the consideration, we need to appreciate friends who worked at university and the one who
