UMM Achieves the Menkumham Award

UNIVERSITY of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is on award winning streak. After achieving the Anugerah Kampus Unggul (AKU) Award from Kopertis Regional VII on last May 20, this time UMM is claimed as The Campus of Cultured Environment with Intellectual Property Rights (HKI) from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) of Republic of Indonesia (RI). The award was directly handed by Yasonna H. Laoly, the minister, to the rector of UMM, Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendi, MAP, at Gedung Negara Grahadi, Surabaya, Tuesday (9/6).

This is the first time for UMM receiving the Menkumham award. The other two universities that received the award are University of Airlangga and University of Brawijaya. The bestowal ceremony was witnessed by the Governor of East Java Dr Sukarwo and the Director General of Intellectual Property Prof. Dr Ahmad M. Ramli, SH.

In the same time, the rector also signed the cooperation agreement with the Director General of Intellectual Property. By signing the agreement, it is expected that UMM can increase the productivity of cultured environment with intellectual property in East Java.

Ramli stated that UMM has developed the intellectual property through the Center of Intellectual Property Rights (Sentra HAKI). “UMM also facilitates society and students to fairly develop the intellectual property,“ he said in the recitation of Menkumham decree.

Muhadjir admitted that the award is one achievement that should be possessed by every university. As the center of excellence, campus needs to show its tendency on the award of the intellectual property rights and also contributes establishing society through the mentoring of the intellectual property registration. Thus, all the inventions by campus and society will be copyrighted.

“Actually, there are many inventions by the lecturers and students that are really creative and innovative. It is a pity that not all of them are being patented yet. Through this award, UMM will improve its concern in managing these intelligence property rights,” said Muhadjir.

Furthermore, in order to encourage the creativity and innovation among lecturers and students, UMM will form Task Force which is specifically functioned to identify, motivate, and support new inventions in UMM. “We have the Center of HAKI to accommodate their intellectual property and register them to Kemenkumham to be copyrighted,” he added.

The Center of HAKI is directed by Prof. Dr Sujono, M.Kes. It stands under the supervision of Directorate of Research and Community Service (DPPM) UMM. It is not only operating internally in campus, but also spreading its wings to society through technical assistance. “All this time we had conducted assistance to productive Small to Medium Enterprises (UMKM). We will also patent the geographical indication and organic apple production,” said Sudjono.

These two awards for UMM complete the previous achievement, that is as the accredited campus with ‘A’ score, UMM research institution which gained Three Golden Star Cluster Mandiri, and also the acquisition of ISO certificate with standard 9001:2008. (nas/t_far)
