|Get Involved: Foreign Students get involved in compiling Test of Academic English Proficiency (TAEP), especially in Listening Section.
University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has International-scaled Measurement for English Proficiency named Test of Academic English Proficiency (TAEP). Similar to Test of English as a Foreign Languague (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS), TAEP can be used for English proficiency measurement.
Differently, according to Director of Language Center (LC) UMM Dr. Masduki, M.Pd, TAEP is directly designed by UMM while TOELF and IELTS are designed by other country. “The advantage of TAEP for being directly designed by UMM is we could be hence evaded from illegal application of TOEFL and IELTS,” said him.
TAEP is regarded as low cost test yet having guaranteed quality. “I guarantee those having great score in TAEP will also have great score in other English proficiency tests,” he added.
Moreover, in fact TAEP has been conducted by UMM since last 2012; However, the copyright from Directorate General of Intellectual Work Right (Dirjen HKI) Ministry of Law and Human Right (Kemenkumham) has just been received this year.
Adding, Masduki explained that TAEP has been tested. The quality of this test has been considered equal to other English Proficiency Tests. “Last year, UMM students participating in Erasmus Mundus Scholarship merely attached TAEP score without any TOEFL or IELTS score and it was still admitted by European Commission,” he explained.
Indeed, he added, TAEP covers the global representation of English Language for speakers in listening section of this test are not only from England and America. Instead, they also come from other countries such as Brazil, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, Poland, France, Singapore, Spain, Uzbekistan, etc.
“Due to this condition, rhythm and pronunciation in this section are different. It represents the global status of English Language, not only for America or England. Thereby, we can say that TAEP represents Globish (Global English, red),” added him.
For the speakers of listening section, LC cooperates with International Relations Office (IRO) coordinating foreign students in UMM. “UMM has many foreign students undermanaged by IRO. Thereby, we cooperates with IRO to determine the speakers in listening section,” explained Masduki.
Related to test implementation, Head of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program Wahyu Widi explained that TAEP was conducted in three phases. First phase was conducted before first semester while for second and third phases were conducted in fifth semester and graduation, respectively. This interlude was designed to give chance for students to develop their English proficiency. “Graphic documentation of test results can be accessed in LC,” he said.
Widi added that both Human Resource (SDM) and student’s English interest have been good. “Students have realized the important of English. They commonly achieve great score in TAEP,” ended him. (dar/zul/han/t_stu)
