The Makassar 47th Muhammadiyah Congress was opened with the Tanwir (discussion) assembly on Sunday (2/8). As the result, there are 39 candidates of the Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Board that will be elected in the congress. According to the schedule, the congress will be attended by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo on August 3 2015.
Among the candidates, there are three rectors of Muhammadiyah Universities (PTM), they are: the Rector of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, MAP, the Rector of University of Muhammadiyah of Prof. Dr. Hamka Jakarta (Uhamka)Prof. Dr. Suyatno and the Rector of University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) Prof. Dr. Bambang Setiaji, MM. Among these three, Muhadjir gained the most votes, 138 votes and takes the 7th place out of the total candidates.
Commenting on the participation of the candidates from the Philanthropic Executive Board, the Chairman of Muhammadiyah Regional Executive Board (PWM) of South Sulawesi Dr. Alwi Uddin, M.Ag expressed his support. As one of the candidates, he informed that the candidates are experienced in managing philanthropic institution and much contributing in the movement of Muhammadiyah. “The rule is, the one who is elected must stand down his position in university and start to concern on the Central Board,” he said.
It is not a surprise that Muhadjir is placed among the ten top candidates. His movements in the area of out of his circle of rector position led him eminent. He is now in charge as the Vice Chairman of East Java Regional Muhammadiyah Executive Board and is actively involved in visiting activities. What seem to be the preferable factors of being elected as one of the candidates are his insight and leadership.
“Everyone knows him. He is an ulama, philosopher and also leader having wide networking,” said one of the local committee. As the alumni of UMM, he is proud that Muhadjir becomes one of the candidates. (nas/t_far)
