Technology of Communication for Total Paralyzed People

Faculty of Engineering held a national seminar and workshop titled Brain Computer Interface; Solusi Berkomunikasi dengan Penderita Lumpuh Total, Saturday (4/10), at the UMM Dome Theatre. This one-day seminar presented some experts, both in the field of technology and psychology.

They were Mochammad Hariadi ST, MSc, PhD (Artificial Intelligence Expert from ITS), Nathan Gusti Ryan (IT Consultant-XP Solution Surabaya and Moderator  of National Mailing Yogyafree XCode-White Hacker Community), Amelia Pramono, S.Psi (Director of Children Leadership Education), Narenda Wicaksono (Microsoft IT Pro Advistor), Ronald Rajagukguk (Microsoft Developer Advisor) and Processor Company Team (Advanced Micro Devices).

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is a device-controlling technology without the use of muscles, voice, and the other, involving motoric function. In other words, BCI technology is a technique of controlling a device using "mind". Through BCI, it is expected that this technology can be used as a rehabilitation tool and means of communication for total paralyzed people, and can also be used for controlling technique in computer games.

Sabri Balafif, Chairman of the Committee of seminar said that the seminar was to increase the knowledge of students and the public about the positive side of technological progress, in this case, the solution to communicate with total paralyzed patient. "In addition, such knowledge has never been taught in any subjects here, whereas it is considered important to stimulate students to be more sensitive in responding to problems that exist in the environment around us," said Sabri.

            Seminar and workshop which were attended by 300 participants were enlivened with demo by Microsoft Robotics Studio and also traditionla dance by the dance team. In addition, the seminar was also attended by Tour Ambassador of Malang and Batu. (trs/nas/t_ris)
