In 2035, the World Will be a Food Crisis, Said the Dean of Agriculture-Animal Husbandry

In 2035, the whole world will be a food crisis,” said the dean of Faculty of Agriculture-Animal Husbandary UMM, Dr.Ir.David Hermawan, MP., IPM, Thursday (6/12). This is caused by population growth which continually increase. It is, said David, not balance with the food, energy, and water availability.

 

However, he continued, some circles in Indonesia won’t be affected by this condition. “Yet Indonesia is ready to face this crisis because we have good geography with a lot of water reserves and fertile soil,” said David.

 

This was conveyed by David at the training for credit analyst at National Bank Indonesia (BNI). This training is as an effort for skill enhancement in financing in the field of Agriculture and Animal Husbandary. Primarily, hopefully the distribution of People’s Business Credit (KUR) is right on target.

 

David said, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandary University of Muhammadiyah Malang is ready to involve in food crisis in the future. This is, continued David, because FPP UMM has department in the whole food sector, namely Livestock, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry.

 

 “Those who aks for training about fisheries were not only from BNI Bank but also PT. Aqua. (Steam Power Plant Unit, red.) Paiton also asked for training about livestock and fisheries  for the employee who would retire,” said David.

 

This kind of training, according to David, is very important to prepare the stakeholder including farmers and breeders to face the crisis. In his opinion, presently, there are three important sector that should be done namely education, food, and health.

 

In the education aspect, some UMM study programs have obtained an A acreditation and make some of them which left behind become faster. Besides, his side will also develop department which is recognized by international acreditation board.

 

UMM, said Vice Rector I, Prof.Dr.Syamsul Arifin, M.Si who handles academic field, has 3 study programs recognized by Asean University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA), namely Management, Education of Biology and Agriculture Department. The other departments will soon follow.

 

The performance of research and publication is in the spotlight especially publication in reputable international journal. Syamsul admitted that he has had coaching scheme and special development so that lecturers can publish their articles  in reputable international journal.

 

 “Not less important,” explained syamsul, “student achievements is also a benchmark that should not be left behind. From many strategies, we have modality to keep developing.” No wonder if UMM has been glanced at many circles to aks for cooperation. (ard)
