The inauguration was carried out by the Chairman of Indonesian Enginer Association (PII) of East Java Region, Prof.Dr.Ir.M.Bisri, MS.

“This is the first time inauguration of engineer in East Java. The first in Indonesia was UGM, second was UMM,” said Bisri.

Menristekditi regulation No. 35 of 2016 concerning the implementation of Engineer Department provides mandates to 40 uniersiies in Indonesia to open PSPPI including UMM. Through lecturing, PSPPI students have the right to have engineer title or “Ir.”.

After obtaining the title, they could fill the portfolio and examination which was held by PII center to get the title of first professional engineer, middle professional engineer, and major professional engineer. After that, they are expected to be able to compete with foreign workers.

According to Bisri, Indonesia only has a few who have engineer title. Among 20 thousand PII members, only 4300 who have the title. “I wish this program should be accelerated. In engineering degree, if you want to be an engineer, you have to wait till 2 years. Thus, the participants are always few,” explained Bisri.

In addition, Bisri also wants a large design to guarantee employement opportunities for scholars. According to him, there must be a statistical data regarding to scholars and engineer needs in the government and company. So, the universities can prepare for it.

“There are a lot of graduates who are not on target because of the lack opportunities. We are really preparing the students to build the country based on their major, but engineers who graduated even sell clothes. This is in vain,” he said.
