A Praxis of Progressive Indonesia, Enforcing a National Role of Muhammadiyah

A concept of Progressive Indonesia can accommodate a contributive strategy of Muhammadiyah for national dynamics. It was recorded in one session of Ramadhan Studies in Regional Executive Board of Muhammadiyah (PWM) East Java 1436 H themed “Tantangan Muhammadiyah Lima Tahun ke Depan” which was held last Sunday (28/70 in Dome of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).

            The session presented speakers: Head of Central Executive Board of Muhammadiyah (PP) Dr. Haedar Nashir, Secretary General (Sekjen) of PP Muhammadiyah Dr. Abdul Mu’thi, and UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, MAP. In his speech, Haedar explained, the concept of progressive Indonesia can be realized through a synergy among lines, especially the civil society synergy.

            “Yet, he should not ignore the party’s role. They indeed help our national roles, one of which might be seen through Muhammadiyah’s constitutional jihad in each cadre occupying the political circles,” said Haedar.

            Besides, he added, Muhammadiyah should internally strengthen its ideology. “All leaders in every level have to represent an Islamic frame of thought. So does its ideology,” he explained.

            Confirming the statement, Mu’thi said, the concept of progressive Indonesia can become Muhammadiyah’s spirit in every substantial change, one of which is through limited amendment of Undang-Undang Dasar 1945. “There are several articles that are going too far.”

            In another occasion, Muhadjir considered, Muhammadiyah remains existed due to three aspects realizing an idea into an action. They are archeological science, ideology, and instrumentalist.  

            In a depth concept, accordingly, Muhammadiyah owns firmly-rooted archeological science. Many organizations, according to Muhadjir, cannot be developed in Indonesia due to lack of genealogical science.

            In terms of ideology, Muhammadiyah is deemed successfully developed the faith among cadres, believing Muhammadiyah is the best way to be Muslim. Meanwhile, in terms of instrumentalist, Muhammadiyah owns many practical instruments to realize its praxis ideas.

            In further, Muhadjir hoped, Muhammadiyah in a future is able to intensify its humanism orientation, developing universal humanism. Hence, Muhammadiyah could cross boundaries of individualism, nepotism, parochialism, and nationalism. (han/t_stu)
