TO COMMEMORATE the Nuzulul Qur’an Ramadhan 1436 Hijriah,,University of Muhammadiyah held the Islamic lecturing themed ‘Sains dan Al-Quran’ by the best seller ‘Ayat-ayat Semesta’ author Dr Agus Purwanto. The events held after the congregational tarawih at AR Fachruddin Mosque UMM, Friday (3/7)

In his lecturing, Agus admitted that he concerned on the condition of Muslim being left behind in science. “When I was learning physics at school, I wondered why all the physics formulas are invented by western scientists. Newton, Einstein, all from the west. I was encouraged to be a Muslim scientist,” he said.

For him, a country can be considered as developed when it takes full control in science since it highly influences the process of production and consumption. “I’ve never seen any motorcycle branded ‘Paijo’. There are only Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki which are from Japan. How can we be a leading country if in every year we consume millions of motorcycle imported from there,” he said.

According to Agus, the retardation resulted from the tendency of Indonesian Muslims inn orientating the dimension of fiqh and tassawuf. He added that in fact, there are 800 verses of Qur’an about universe, and 160 verses about fiqh. “However, Muslims are too much arguing about fiqh matters that the scientific dimensions of Qur’an are neglected,” he informed.

Therefore, he expected that Qur’an can contribute more to the scientific development through research and analysis. In his opinion, Muslims should use Qur’an as the basic foothold in arranging theoretical premises rather than considering it as testament to verify the theories. “It’s our task to reveal the scientific secret of Qur’an,” he said.

To prove that Qur’an is full of scientific explanations and theoretical premises, he quoted several verses about ant queen, bees and honey, balance and harmony of universe, light above light, and reasoning beyond the verse of supernova.

Besides spawning a number of books, concept, and theory, he also manifested his ideas by forming the scientific-based boarding school named ‘Pesantren Sains (Trensains)’ which applies the curriculum containing philosophy, science, and Arabic subjects. So far it has developed in Sragen and Jombang, East Java and will be opened in Yogyakarta (Central Java) and Lombok (NTB).

After the lecturing of Science and Qur’an, there will be held an event themed ‘Sinau Nuzulul Qur’an’ Bareng Emha Ainun Najib dan Kiai Kanjeng’ on July 5 starting from 20.00 at UMM helipad. The two Nuzulul Qur’an are the series of Syiar Ramadhan 1436 H consist of several agenda which has been n held since the first week of Ramadhan and will be closed by the congregation of Eid al-Fitr on three mosques, namely Ad-Dakwah mosque on Campus II, AR Fachruddin Mosque on Campus III, and KH Bedjo Dermoleksono Mosque on UMM Hospital.
