The IV period graduation ceremony of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) 2019 was attended by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia (Menko PMK RI) Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendi, M.AP, Saturday (11/30). Muhadjir gave a scientific speech in front of1514 graduates from various levels, those are the Doctoral Education Program (S3), Masters Education Program (S2), Bachelor Education Program (S1), Three year Diploma Education Program (D3), and Professional Education Program.
On that occasion, Muhadjir specifically discussed the focus of President Joko Widodo's government in his second leadership period, specifically related to the mandate charged to Muhadjir. He emphasized that there are 9 points ofthe Indonesian President's mission in 2019-2024 in his Ministry. Namely improving the quality of Indonesian people, equitable development, and cultural progress that reflects the nation's personality.
"Therefore, the macro indicator that will be the measure of the Coordinating Ministry for PMK are first, about fighting poverty. The second is an increase in the Indonesian Human Development Index (IPM), and the third is to reduce the Gini Ratio Index (a unit to measure the level of inequality, red.)," Muhadjir revealed, this task cannot be carried out maximally if it is only charged to one party. Various parties including universities must also contribute.
Muhadjir the UMM White Campus Former Rector for the period of 2000 to 2016, based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in August 2019, national employment conditions were recorded at 2.55 million new workforces. "The human resources of our workforce are 57.54% with an elementary school and junior high school equivalent, and 30% have a high school / vocational school equivalent. While the percentage of the education workforce in Diploma, Bachelor and Masters and Doctoral degrees are only 12.4%," said Muhadjir.
He said UMM graduates were part of the 12.4% workforce who would now be ready to enter the workforce. The percentage of open unemployment is currently 5.28% or 7.05%. "So our open unemployment rate is quite high with more than 7%. Based on these data in education there are two things that cause the phenomenon. Namely the limited access and low quality of our higher education," said Muhadjir in his speech.
"Although UMM has 12 years of perched at the highest peak for universities in East Java. But I wish that the managers are not satisfied with it, you must continue to catch up with the others and must be the first in everything. Then, more importantly, this data shows that our education still needs to be greatly improved in relation to the mastery of engineering science and mathematical technology or called STEM," said Muhadjir.
The presence of Minister Muhadjir also simultaneously reviewed the progress of the construction of UMM's new business unit, the Rayz Hotel Sengkaling. Like other business units, Rayz Hotel Sengkaling will also be an applied laboratory for the White Campus academic community. The existence of Rayz Sengkaling Hotel increased the number of owned hotels, namely the Kapal Garden Hotel at UMM Sengkaling Recreational Park. It is targeted that the construction will be completed in February next year.
Chairperson of the Daily Board of Trustees who is also a Member of the Presidential Advisory Council of the Republic of Indonesia (RI Wantimpres) Prof. Dr. HA. Malik Fadjar, M.Sc said that the graduation ceremony this time coincided with the 107th birth month of Muhammadiyah. Muhammadiyah's journey for 107 years as the focus of attention was the development of human resources, the resources of their members. This is in line with the efforts being pursued by the Coordinating Minister for PMK RI.
In essence, long before Indonesia's independence, Muhammadiyah had placed the position of human resource development as an inseparable part of the development of the people and nation. "Therefore, I advise graduates who have been graduated to not forget the development of a human resource to meet a dynamic future with all its changes," said Malik.
By quoting one of the verses of the Koran, Malik advises the graduates to always develop positive thoughts or in the language of the Koran "khusnudzon". "That is a very important thing. Because if we are able to develop positive thoughts, our lives will be productive and Insya Allah, be healthy and always develop the sowing of virtue for the benefit of all. Hopefully, this bachelor's degree can even more develop your positive thoughts," he said.
