For 6 times, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has been trusted accompanying Peace Corps volunteers as Pre-Service Training (PST) host. PST is 10-week language and culture training for Peace Corps volunteers who will later be inaugurated as true-volunteers.
Far before their coming in March 19th, UMM has prepared buddies for 65 volunteers. “A selection for buddies has been conducted in last January,” said staff of International Relation Office (IRO) UMM Teguh Sriwiyono.
It, said Teguh, proved that UMM was indeed cooperative in managing and accompanying them. Due to this sincerity, UMM has been trusted as Peace Corps partner.
From this selection, there are 15 selected buddies. They will later become communicator between American volunteers and local society in Batu city. “Therefore, these buddies are also known as community liason (CL), community communicator.”
Later, during PST program, CL will accompany volunteers to learn local language as well as Indonesia cultures. Considering this such important duty, Teguh added, they would be demanded to have great personality, communicative, and friendly.
One of selected buddies Fatur Roji expressed his interest towards many programs he would do as accompanying Peace Corps volunteers. “It is such great chance for me to introduce Indonesia culture, especially Java culture,” said him, one of English Department students.
Peace Corps is America independent organization that routinely sends volunteers to many developing countries for many programs related to environment, health, and education. In Indonesia, this program is focused on education affairs. (ica/han/t_stu)
