Runner-Up: Communication Students Compete in National PR Competition

Communication Studies Department, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) once again won a competition. This time, Team Eskalator Seven achieved runner-up in national competition of Marketing Public Relations (MPR) in Public Relations Competition (PresCo) Communication Fiesta, held in Faculty of Communication Studies University of Katolik Widya Mandala (UKWM), Surabaya (12-14/3).

            The team consisting of Muhammad Faridh, Syehan Alhamid, and Richard Prayoga successfully achieved second place after competing with other nine teams throughout Indonesia. Ten finalists in this competition are: two teams from UMM (Eskalator Seven and Eskalator Muda), two teams from University of Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY), and the rest from University of Indonesia (UI), University of Gajah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta, University of Airlangga (Unair) Surabaya, University of Bunda Mulia (UBM) Jakarta, host team UKWM, and University of Merdeka Malang (Unmer).

            Being themed “Pesona Nusantara menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN (MEA) 2015”, Team Eskalator Seven raised local culture of Karimun Jawa. “Accordingly, Karimun Jawa has great potency in MEA 2015 in terms of strategic location, society, and tourism,” said Faridh.

            Syehan added that it was not easy to reach top five. In the first day, all ten teams visited Kebun Binatang Surabaya (KBS) and Taman Ria Kenjeran Baru to observe those two places. The next day, we present proposal that has been sent to the committee. After presentation, we were to conduct briefing related to KBS. “All participants are demanded to propose a creative program for settling down negative image of this place and, of course, the program should be effective and measurable,” he added.       

            After being evaluated by juries, it was eventually selected five teams in final phase. Those five teams were: UMM (Eskalator Seven), two teams from UAJY, Unair, and UGM. “The training and rest time are very short. It takes so much hard-work, especially for briefing. Alhamdulillah we pass the final presentation. We have done our best for UMM,” added him.

            Besides creating depth analysis and creative proposal, their performance should be unique. In semifinal presentation, UMM team wore beach clothes while in final presentation they wore East Java traditional costume. “In each phase, UMM team becomes main concern since we always provide unique and creative performance. We wore beach costume in semifinal and East Java traditional costumes in final. It is all about totality,” said Richard.

            In this PresCo event, first winner was achieved by Unair while second one was achieved by UMM. “Interestingly, in each Communication Fiesta competition, there is no third winner,” Richard ended. (zul/han/t_stu)
