MAFI Fest 2019 Becomes an Event for Indonesian Young Filmmakers

This 2019 is the 15th time of the conducting of film competition for talented young Indonesian filmmakers; Malang Film Festival (MAFI Fest). MAFI Fest is the oldest student film festival in Indonesia. This is a yearly event organized by UMM Student Activity Units (UKM) Kine Klub.

This event was started Wednesday (10/4) night in UMM Theatre Dome that attended by UMM Rector Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd. and Pusbang Film. This year MAFI Fest choose “Sintesa” as the theme. “Sintesa itself were combinations of several elements that form a harmony,” said MAFI Fest Director Aliya Dwi Citra.

This philosophy can be interpreted in the world of film in a form of collaborative programs, such as the first roadshow collaborating with Community Reading Terrace, Literacy Terrace and the second roadshow collaborating with Malang Film Paradeto commemorate the National Film Day.

MAFI Fest invited on of the guest film “Nyanyian Akar Rumput”. An indie film that tells the stories about a wife and two kids from a Widji Thukul movement activist in living her life, after her husband and their dad declared missing. It will some footages of the riots on Mei 1998 inside the film.

This MAFI Fest preparations were started after the general committee formed on August 2018, by arranging the programs, themes, performer, till the films that will be shown. Until November 2018 the general committee was formed after the open recruitment of MAFI Fest 2019 committee.

This year MAFI Fest had 4 categories, there are College Student’s Short Fiction, Student’s Short Fiction, College Student Documentary, and Student Documentary. The total amount of films that joined were increased from the previous year, there were 477 films in competition program until 23 films that pass the curation.

The non-competition programs were interesting, there are The Awarding Night, Malangan Session, Special Show Program, Premiere Program, General Discussion, and Criticism Class. All of the programs were summarized in four days during the event started on 10th until 13th April 2019.

Moreover, MAFI Fest was supported by Viu Indonesia streaming service provider through Pitching Forum cooperation programs. That program was the form of support from Viu Indonesia to the young filmmaker in Malang who had a story idea to be produced.

 “Still, it is a place for filmmakers from college, students and general to develop their film distributing pattern that not just ended in festivals or competitions, but also a digital platform,” said Senior Vice President – Viu Indonesia Marketing Team in a press conference at UMM Dome Theatre.
