Collaborating with The Asia Foundation, Multiculturalism and Religion Studies Center (Pusam) Post-graduate Program of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (PPs UMM) holds grand launching and book review titled “Studi Islam Kontemporer: Arus Radikalisasi dan Multikulturalisme di Indonesia” written by Professor of UMM Religion Sociology Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Si.
This event held in Building KH Ahmad Dahlan, UMM Inn on Saturday (15/3) was directly attended by the writer and many religion experts as speakers such as: program officer of The Asia Foundation Dr. Budhy Munawar-Rachman as well as three UMM academicians Prof. Dr. Ishomuddin, Prof. Dr. Tobroni, and Dr. Moh Nurhakim.
Syamsul explained his book was aimed to investigate Islam and its contemporary development. Adding, many current religion issues such as conflicts, radicalism, and human rights (HAM) are worth to be further discussed. “In this book, I intentionally investigate those issues by providing defined perspective known as multiculturalism,” said Syamsul.

Related to UMM response towards these issues, Syamsul said, due to UMM role in Muhammadiyah, it has become obligation for UMM to fight against any violence and present Islam as peaceful religion. “Muhammadiyah has a great history related to the way how to present Islam as peaceful religion and welcome to the differences,” he added.
Being recognized as writer and academician, Syamsul is very proactive to respond any issue related to conflicts and religion violence throughout Indonesia in terms of both theoretical and practical things. In practical thing, for example, he roles as chairman of National Working Group (Pokjanas) for Sunni-Syiah reconciliation in Sampang, Madura along with religion freedom alliance. He also often gets involved in establishing harmony and peace community in various regions throughout Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Budhy Munawar-Rachman in his comment stated this book would surely enrich Islam Studies in Indonesia. “Due to its contemporary approach and relevance towards many religion problems in nowadays society, this book is regarded as post-modern,” said him.
Beside launching this book, it also played a film titled “World Interfaith Harmony Week: Building Peace in Ambon” addressed as dissemination effort to create peace in the world. This short film tells about phenomena: conflict and resolution in Ambon involving many peace figures from Indonesia and world in which Syamsul was also involved within. (ica/han/t_stu)
