THE SERIES of program of Food Science and Technology (ITP) Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), starting from the Internal Halal Auditor Training for students on May 25 up to the Seminar of Safe-Halal Food on June 11, has been conducted successfully. After the events, through the Center of Safe and Halal Food Study, ITP UMM keeps supervising Small to Medium Enterprises (UMKM) and young auditors for the halal certification upon food, drugs and cosmetics.
“In the last month training, there were senior students and two UMKMs chosen to be supervised and registered as halal at the Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics (LP POM) of Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) of East Java,” said Dr Ir Hj Elfi Anis Saati, MP in her office, Saturday (20/6).
The events were held in order to celebrate the acquisition of program proposal of social service by three ITP lecturers, i.e. Dr. Warkoyo, MP with title ”Science, Technology and Art for Society (IbM): The Supervision of UMKM Halal Certification in Malang”, Dr Ir Hj Elfi Anis Saati, MP with title ”Science, Technology and Art for Society (IbM): Culinary/Catering Business with Education of Healthy Food Management in Pasuruan”, and Dr Ir Damat, MP with title “”Science, Technology and Art for Campus’ Innovation and Creativity (IbIKK): Functional Breads and Cookies from Modified Arrowroot Starch Fortified With Antioxidant-Rich Natural Food Coloring”.
Another seminar held on June 11 themed “The Importance of Halal Certification: Prospects, Benefits and Chances for Enterprises and The Development of Science, Technology and Art (IPTEKS) in Facing the Global Market” was presented by the Director of LP POM MUI of East Java Prof. Dr H Sugijanto, MS, the Head of Quality Assurance of Pandaan-Pasuruan Cleo Company Ibnu Affan, STP and the Head of the Center of Safe and Halal Food Study Dr Ir Hj Elfi Anis Saati, MP.
“Professor Sugijanto was inquired with many questions about the efforts in trawling through UMKM in obtaining free quota of halal certification registration from local government such the Department of Industry and Cooperative in Malang. Ibnu Affan, who is an alumnus of ITP UMM explained more about his tough experience as internal halal auditor supervising the quality of International Organization for Standardization (ISO), said Saati.
Moreover, there were various products of UMKM being displayed, free students-made ice cream, and posters ITP lecturers’ research results. There was also product of rose essence drink invented by Saati in 2000. University Farm (UF) UMM also produced bakery for the seminar lunch.“Hopefully all the activities can motivate students and alumni to achieve goals, strengthen the atmosphere of entrepreneurship, and being ready to be reliable entrepreneurs,” she expected.
