UMM Sengkaling Park has been opened officially in grand-launching on Saturday (28/2). The opening once marked rebranding of this recreational park from “Taman Rekreasi Sengkaling” (TRS) to “Taman Sengkaling UMM”. Since being acquired in last 2013, many renovations have been done by UMM including the establishment of greatest culinary place in East Java, which is “Sengkaling Food Festival” (SFF).
The opening was done by General Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Council (PP) Prof. Dr. Din Syamsuddin, MA, accompanied by Vice Governor of East Java H. Saifullah Yusuf, Malang Regent H Rendra Kresna, UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, MAP, and managements of UMM Sengkaling Park. It was held in “Romantic Park” inside the recreational park attended by structural functionaries of UMM, Heads of Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah throughout Malang, as well as many business partners.
Din in his speech after signing the inscription stated that the takeover of this recreational park indeed became particular characteristic of UMM which is always discovering and inventing new thing. In a future, Din hoped this place could become recreational center mainly concerning on educative and Islamic values. “It will be great if UMM develops this UMM Sengkaling Park into syariah recreational park,” said him.
Adding, he also hoped two things from UMM: to keep improving this recreational place (there should be interesting packaging), and rebranding for it. “A product is seen through its package (packaging). Therefore, there should be a new interesting innovation for UMM Recreational Park to attract visitors. Moreover, related to rebranding, there should be rebranding for this recreational place to add its attractiveness,” he added.
Confirming the statement, Malang Regent Rendra Kresna also supported the takeover. “As I heard that UMM would take over this recreational place, I directly supported it. Hopefully, UMM could improve this recreational place into better place recalling that this place is indeed one of legendary tourism places contributing the highest income for Malang,” said Rendra.
UMM Rector also told that long time ago in colonialism-age, this recreational place was such a graveyard without any visitor. However, after being opened for public –even after being acquired by UMM— there are numerous visitors coming from morning through night every day.
“Alhamdulillah, after opening SFF and huge renovation, there is significant increase of visitor day by day. It is also due to the youths within management who always discover new inventions,” said Rector.
Moreover, he also stated within adjacent period, there would be connecting bridge between UMM and UMM Sengkaling Park. “These two place are separated by river Brantas. As the connecting bridge has been done, all areas within campus will become part of UMM Sengkaling Park,” Muhadjir ended. (zul/han/t_stu)
