MAFI FEST: Malang Film Festival (MAFI Fest) comes to Term XI. This annual event held by Student's Activities Unit Kine Klub successfully attracts many filmmakers throughout Indonesia.

A leading filmmaker event, Malang Film Festival (MAFI Fest) currently comes to terms XI. This annual event held by Student’s Activities Unit Kine Klub University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) will be conducted during April 2nd – 4th, 2015. The committee of this event believed that it would become barometer for Indonesia young filmmakers.

Every year, the festival has gathered hundreds of indie filmmakers. This year, a deadline for application has been closed last February and the committee has received more than 200 works, twice than what was expected. Director of MAFI Fest Maharina Novia Zahro explained there would be 25 films which pass the selection process and be selected in next April Festival.

Beside the number of coming films, she also optimistically said the festival audiences would significantly increase. Last year, it gathered more than 1.100 audiences and there will be 2.000 audiences in this year. “This year, the festival will be lasting for 3 days yet we believe there will be much more audiences compared to last year,” explained her.

MAFI Fest, before rebranding of National Film Board into Creative Economy and Tourism Board, was included in best 10 national film festivals throughout Indonesia. Despite this fact, Marina regretted the lack of interests from both Malang and East Java government related to best student’s film festival in Indonesia.

Accordingly, previous MAFI Fest was financed by provincial government and Creative Economy and Tourism Ministry (Kemenparekraf). This year, our proposal was not responded positively. “It seems that they have their own event like MAFI Fest and therefore we do not receive any financial support,” said Maharani as believing that the festival will be well-established due to other financial supports from many sponsors and filmmakers throughout Indonesia.

“The special thing in this event is that all islands throughout Indonesia have sent their representative. It shows that this such festival has been well-known and recognized throughout Indonesia,” added her.

She hoped in a future both local and central government could center their intention towards talented young filmmakers throughout Indonesia. “Our films have a great potential to compete with other foreign films. Hopefully, the government could concern on our local films,” she ended. (zul/nas/t_stu)
