VIVAnews - A German defense companies, Rheinmetall Defense, successfully tested a laser weapon capable of shooting down two drone (drones). This weapon is still being developed and will be smaller in the future.
As reported by the BBC this week, Rheinmetall laser weapon capable of shooting moving objects in the air at a distance of more than one kilometer. Weapons with two laser shooters are capable of penetrating steel reinforced concrete.
Powered laser weapons systems 50 KW using radar and optical systems to detect and track two drones were coming, said the company statement. Drone is flying with a speed of 50 meters per second, and was shot down as he entered the area of the laser.
Radar guns work in determining the location of the target to be shot, while improving the accuracy of the optical system a shot. In addition to firing drones, laser is capable of destroying a 15mm thick steel balls, which are made to resemble a mortar attack.
According to Rheinmetall, the weapon is capable of working in all weather, including snow, heat and rain. This has been proven in testing at some time. In the future, this weapon can be affixed to the vehicle combat and combined with a 35mm revolver cannon.
Not only German companies are beginning to develop weapons of this type. Earlier, the U.S. company Raytheon exhibit anti-aircraft laser power 50KW at Farnborough Air Exposition in 2010. Then in June 2012, the U.S. military tested a laser weapon that can burn a boat.
