Only in 10 weeks, Laura Bloomer has been fluent to speak bahasa Indonesia. During joining Preservice Training at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and in Batu, the Peace Corps volunteer from USA really internalized every agenda that she joined. Whereas, he didn't recognize at all the language and culture of Indonesia. &amp;quot;Now, it looks like there is a miracle, so I can speak bahasa Indonesia fluently,&amp;quot; Lura said when she was given an opportunity to give impression before being released by the USA ambassador for Indonesia, Scot Marciel, in UMM Dome on Monday (17/6).
Laura was one of 50 volunteers who were released by the USA ambassador after passing three months of Indonesian language and cultural training before being deployed in several schools in East Java and West Java for the next two years. For UMM, in becoming the host of similar program it has entered the fourth years. Since 2010, UMM has been trusted to be the host university and also every year, the USA ambassador inaugurates and swears in the volunteers before they are deployed.  
For Scot, this year is the third times to inaugurate the volunteers. Every year, there is always deep impression related to the improvement of the volunteer candidates. &amp;quot;The number of volunteers that we send year by year will increase,&amp;quot; the ambassador who has a friendly face, said. He expected that the relation between two countries can be stronger.

Student creativity in making film and journalistic program was challenged by Communication Laboratory of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). The students were obliged to exhibit their works to various media, including send them to several national television stations or work exhibition in public area. 

The head of UMM Communication Laboratory, Jamroji, M.Comm, stated that this time, his party collected dozens of students works. Some of them were very worth to be published to the public.  

 &amp;ldquo;Both show exhibition and publication in media are several kinds of reponsibilities  in practicum duty. Thus, the students must be ready to be criticized, appreciated, and praised,&amp;quot; Jamroji, who graduated from Edith Cowan University, Australia, said before the exhibition of student work, on Thursday (13/06). 
 As many as 18 journalistic reports both in the form of hard and soft news of the students had been sent to various television stations, such as for Citizen Journalism on NET and Wideshot Metrotv. Some of them have got showtime.

The controversy of English subject abolishment for Elementary School student attracted attention Jennifer Plaistowe. A student from Australia who is now studying at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) researched three schools in Malang about school, parents, and student, response toward English subject. 

Jennifer or usually called Jen, is a participant of Australian Consortium for In Country Indonesian Studies (Acicis). He is a student of class 36. Since 1994, UMM has been a partner of Acicis and every semester accepts several students who mostly come from Australia.  

In explanation of her final research, on Monday (10/6), Jen brought the theme &amp;quot;The controversy of English importance for Elementary School Student in Indonesia (A study about the Policy of English Abolishment in Elementary School Level)&amp;quot;. Assisted by the Director residence of Acicis, Dr Philip King and the head of UMM Acicis Program, Widiya Yutanti, MA, Jen presented her research by using bahasa Indonesia fluently.  

The research was conducted by Jen in three schools, they are SD Kauman 1, Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) 1 and  SD Penanggungan Malang. Jen described about social and education condition encountered by the students in each school. According to her, there are several controversies, one of them is English becomes a local content in Elementary School curriculum in 2013.

        A Tax Center in the Faculty of Economy and Business of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was officially launched on Tuesday (11/9). The launching was also continued with a seminar bringing the theme &amp;quot; &amp;ldquo;Penanggulangan Kejahatan Perpajakan untuk Kesejahteraan Masyarakat&amp;rdquo;. As the speaker is the office head of Tax Director General Region 3 of East Java,  Drs. Ken Dwijugiasteadi, Ak, M. Sc, the dean of FH UMM Sidik Sunaryo, SH, M.Si, a professor of bankruptcy law, Prof. Dr. Rahayu Hartini SH, MSi, and a tax consultant, Priyo Jatmiko.
        In his speech, Vice Rector I (PR I) Prof Dr Bambang Widagdo MM  explained about program socialization, new things and policies which are conducted at the tax launching. &amp;quot;Tax establishes the independence of nation and people,&amp;quot; he explained. He also explained that UMM has established cooperation with the Director General of Tax since long time ago. 

        Ken explained about the control of state's tax crime which is done by the taxation officer and the assessable person. &amp;quot;State's budget of revenue and expenditure (APBN) was lost up to more than 1 trillion, consequently the public cannot feel the facility from country,&amp;quot; Ken sated.

   Communication study program of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (Prodi Ikom UMM) held guest lecture bringing theme &amp;ldquo;Crisis Management and Building Reputation Formula&amp;rdquo; with source a senior PR consultant, Nico Wattimena, MA, P.hD in BAU Hall, on Tuesday (11/06). The guest lecture was attended by the Dean of FISIP, Ikom lecturers, and approximately 200 students.  
   In his lecture, Nico assumed that a PR didn't only handle media, but also handle both internal and external case. Crisis itself can be underwent by all organizations, but with our condition, we also be able to play the crisis. 
   There are several attentions to the crisis. It is like surprise when the crisis appears, and event develops in the sense that crisis case can extend. Communication that must be delivered by a PR is giving fact, honest about what is known and what is not known, and tell as needed, don't speculate, next tell honestly. 
 
   &amp;ldquo;Awareness, commitment, concern are important points in crisis problem,&amp;quot; Nico explained. There are 10 steps in facing communication crisis, such as: identifying crisis team and spokesman, spokesman training, establish communication protocol, identifying and knowing audience, ending crisis, deciding communication methods, identifying key message, estimating crisis situation, and anticipating crisis.

The conference of Committe Executive Members of Asian Conference of Religions for Peace (ACRP) was closed on Sunday (9/6) in Batu. As many as 59 interfaith leaders from 17 countries that followed the conference were invited to gala dinner by the Mayor of Batu at City Hall after joining conference for three days at the campus of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).  
The president of ACRP, Prof Dr Din Syamsudin, stated that the conference ran well. The result of the conference will be delivered in next year's general assembly which will be held in Korean Peninsula. 
&amp;ldquo;Each delegate makes note about the religious life from his own country. The problem which is faced is different. ACRP gives recommendation, but the accomplishment still depends on each country,&amp;quot; Din, who is also the general chairman of Muhammadiyah, explained.  
The delegate from India ACRP, N Vasudevan, assumed that Indonesia was an ideal model in religious life. The motto bhinneka tunggal ika was appraised to be able to unite Indonesian people. &amp;quot;Indonesia's Islam is moderate. Its people respect the other religious communities,&amp;quot; he said.

The Faculty of Health Science of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (Fikes-UMM) held Seminar and Workshop of Nurse collaborated with the Association of Indonesian Community Health Nurse (IPKKI). The seminar that brought theme &amp;quot;The Contemporary Strategy of Community Empowerment in Developing Physical, Mental, and Social Health&amp;quot; lasted at UMM Dome theater, on Saturday (8/6). The seminar was attended by participants from several towns such as Kediri, Surabaya, Jombang, Malang and the others. . 
The seminar presented the Head of Indonesian National Nurse Association (PPNI), dr Ahmad Yusuf, The Head of Health Department of East Java, Purwadi, M. Kep., Sp. Kom and an artist, Dik Doank. Purwadi is also known as the Secretary General of IPKKI, while Dik Doank is the owner and founder of a community house, Kandank Jurank Doank.
In his attractive appearance, Dik Doank kept giving motivation to the participants. Being led by the moderator, the Head of Public Relations of UMM,   Nasrullah, Dik Doank explained how to establish the awaraness of community that is clean, loves environment, and has faith power. 
&amp;ldquo;Someone hasn't become a successful nurse, if she hasn't been able to treat her mother well,&amp;quot; Dik Doank said. Thus, a nurse must be able to be closed to deity, in which God is the greatest one in caring people.

The governor of East Java, Dr Soekarwo, considered that executive conference of Asian Conference of Religions for Peace (ACRP) at the campus of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was very strategic. Besides because of the importance of interfaith dialogue, this conference also becomes momentum to see directly how East Java presents a complex society but harmonious and always live together peacefully. 
&amp;ldquo;East Java can be a good model on the life management of religious community in which dialogue is done intensively both between religious community and government, &amp;quot;The Governor said, a moment before opening the agenda in UMM Dome, on Friday night (7/6).
The conference which was held for three days, was followed by 61 interfaith leaders, from 17 Asian and Australian countries. In the opening, it was attended by hundreds of interfaith leaders in Indonesia, including the general chairman of MUI, KH Amidhan, and the other religious leaders. Also, it was attended by the vice mayor of Batu, Punjul Santoso and the floor leader of  Demokrat DPR RI, Nurhayati Assegaf.
This conference was annual conference to discuss the report from each country, contemporary issues related to interfaith dialogue, and decide the host of general assembly next year.   The Hungarian ambassador for Indonesia, Szilveszter Bus, visited the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), on Tuesday (04/06). This time, the visit was intended to strenghten cooperation between the Hungarian embassy and UMM mainly in International Relations Department (HI). 
At UMM, Szilveszter had two agendas, they are talking the cooperation continuation with the Rector of UMM, Muhadjir Effendy, and gave general lecture to the students of Social and Political Science Faculty (FISIP). 

The Vice Director of Community Research and Service (DPPM) of UMM, Dr Vina Salviana DS, stated there were several research cooperations that could be done together. &amp;quot;After seeing the profile of UMM, the Hungarian ambassador was very interested in us,&amp;quot; Vina said.  

One of Szilveszter's interests is the research which becomes appeal in Hungary that is about democracy. According to him, Indonesia can be an example of a fast democracy implementation for ten years. &amp;quot;Meanwhile Hungary needs decades to establish a democracy country,&amp;quot; the ambassador said. 
The Hungarian ambassador offered &amp;quot;Three Parted&amp;quot; consisting of cooperation about democracy between UMM and Hungary in which the implementation is done in Myanmar. Myanmar is chosen because acoording to him, democracy in that country hasn't run completely.

             After achieving institutional accreditation with grade A from the Higher Education National Accreditation Board (BAN-PT) earlier this year, again, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) achieves Anugerah Kampus Unggul (AKU) from Kopertis VII of East Java. AKU trophy for the sixth times for UMM was received by the rector, Muhadjir Effendy, on Thursday (30/5) in Batu. 
            Kopertis confirmed UMM as the most excellent university after assessing three aspects, including governance and institutions, research and service community, and student development. In these three categories, UMM is better than more than 300 private universities in East Java. 

            UMM achievement got appreciation from the head of BAN PT, Prof Dr Masyur Ramli who was increasingly sure that objective decision to give excellent score to PTS was not wrong. &amp;quot;If it really has achievement like this, indeed, it is no doubt that UMM is appropriate to get institutional accreditation with grade A,&amp;quot; Ramli explained.  

Muhadjir stated that this achievement is as the result of UMM hardwork to maintain the quality. For him, a university reputation lies in how the campus keep doing innovation or breakthrough, and keep independent in academic. &amp;quot;Thanks to God, Alhamdulillah, UMM still can be istiqomah in this case,&amp;quot; the rector said.
